How to be an Actor’s Director 3

When directing the key is to make the actors feel comfortable and then they will shine! And when they shine you shine. A majority of people fear public speaking more then they fear death. So remember how nervous they are and that when you do these exercises and play with them this will loosen them up relax them and build trust. Once you have the actors trust you can lead them into battle and they will follow you anywhere. Some other good exercises to do with the actors are

1. Improv, with this one there are many things you can do, improv the scene using their own words. You can improve the scene with a different ending. You can improv what happens before the scene. You can improv what happens after the scene. You can improv I seen that isn’t in the show but the characters refer to in the show.

2. Playing colors with actors. Basically this entails taking the whole scene and playing it all the way through with one emotion. Like anger, then love for each other, then sadness. The colors can be in the scene or not be in the scene. But you will see the scene start to come alive.

3. Switching roles I always loved doing this with my actors it loosens them up and gives them the burning desire they have but are not voicing to show the other actor what they should be doing. But it does this in a way of the other actor not critiquing him but showing him through acting and of course vice versa.

4. Outside in is always a good idea to have the person go back to a time when they felt the similar way to how they want to feel for the scene then mimic the movements, breathing, and facial expressions. For example if you want the actor to get angry in an scene have them throw things and pound on the table, but don’t forget to first have them remember a time when they were angry.
