How I Produced my First Web Series

After working with Mark Elias on The Juggler, he called me up and asked about producing. He was looking for some producers for The Adventures of Lewis and Clark. I brought on the other producer Jus Riddick and we all worked together. I noticed when I was working on the web series that we didn’t have any money, Mark and Jus raised the money and they did a really great job on that. We also did a lot of the casting together, which was great because all three of us are actors so we were able to read with the auditioning actors and I think we did a really good job of casting and it was great to see how many actors came out.

We ended up running a bit behind schedule on casting which was kind of funny but we picked up the pace. The main reason for the delay was because we wanted to really work with the actors and give them the space to do their best work because it can be really nerve wracking to go out there and audition. We wanted help as many actors as possible be their best and also wanted to try to cast as many as possible into the production. That was something I really enjoyed, being able to cast so many people.

The production process was also interesting because we would film for 3 days over a weekend and try to get three episodes done and then a month would go by while Mark handled the editing. He also really handled getting the crew together and everything and it was great working with him and watching how he handled all of that. Watching the editing process was fascinating because we would be able to get better at our acting by watching our performances.  Another helpful tool was our collaboration during read throughs. Mark would write the script, we’d do a read through and then we’d each give notes on what we felt our character was and also use that opportunity to pump up the comedy.

I think it turned out to be a great show. Our budget was essentially zero – I think we may have spent around $200 per episode if that. We traded in a lot of favors (always valuable in Hollywood), but it was a lot of fun and a great learning experience and to have a 12 episode web series under your belt as an actor and producer is pretty amazing.
