Dance it Out

If you’ve watched Grey’s Anatomy, you’ll have seen Meredith and Christina having dance parties when times got tough. Even Callie used to dance in her underwear. While this may seem like just fun scene to break up an otherwise dramatic show, but the truth is that it’s actually a great way to unwind, release stress and raise your mood.

Music has a lot of positive health benefits.
 Mood – It improves your mood which can help you relax and be happier.
 Stress – When you’re stressed out, listening to music with a slower tempo and no lyrics has been shown to help people reduce stress and anxiety.
 Exercise – Music can definitely improve your exercise experience. I definitely find that listening to my favorite upbeat music helps to keep any physical activity I do, fun.
 Memory – I love this one, although I know that it doesn’t always work for everyone. For many people, listening to music, especially with a repetitive rhythm or melody, can help them to learn information, lines or skills. Music helps the brain to form patterns and for many people, this makes learning easier.
 Pain – There have been studies that have shown that people who listened to music before, during and after medical treatment or surgery had less pain overall.
 Comfort – When we are wrapped up in our own heartaches, anger or loneliness, music can help us feel connected to people and feel less isolated. After all, if a songwriter wrote lyrics that resonate with us, that means that at least one other person has felt the same way. There is great solace in knowing that.

Of course, music is also just for fun and enjoyment. For the school dances of our youth. Romantic dancing in the moonlight. First dances at weddings. For doing the Funky Chicken or YMCA and having a laugh.

When I’ve had a long week or a rough day, knowing that I can come home and blast my favorite playlist or musician. I can sing along as loudly as I want or dance around my living room and have a blast. It helps to boost my mood and helps me to start the next day in a much better state of mind. So no matter what, good or bad, don’t underestimate the benefits of music in your life.
