Let me start by telling you that I am not a professional model. I have always been passionate about acting and worked on stage and screen, but modeling was a new world for me when I first decided to give it a try.
One of the professional photographers that I really enjoy working with is Bill Keel. I had done a few group shoots with him and found his particular style of work very comfortable and it really created a positive and confident working environment. Naturally in a group shoot environment you don’t get a lot of one on one time with the photographer, so I was really curious as to how my first solo shoot would work out.
It turns out that I needn’t have worried. Bill has a studio at his home and is extremely patient. He is always happy to explain his process and how he pictures the final product will look. He has certain poses that he prefers and his understanding of what will make you look good, how to light the shot to your advantage and hot to get the most out of his models is the mark of a true artist.
Although I had achieved a certain level of comfort in front of the camera as an actress, I was nervous about taking the step into modeling. Even the most perfect looking humans have insecurities and I am no different. In addition to that, modeling poses are often unnatural and feel awkward, leading to a sense of fear that you’re ruining the shot. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you work with a professional who is patient and takes the time to explain each step of the process and to really direct the shoot, it’s not hard to feel confident and beautiful and once you relax, to even have a lot of fun. The other important thing about working with a professional and doing many shoots is that you also get a lot of bad photos that no one will ever see. And you realize even the most beautiful models I am sure are only sharing thier best with the world too.
When you are modeling, it’s vital that you trust your photographer, not only for their artistic vision and skills to implement that vision, but also their ability to make you feel safe and confident. Remember to check out their portfolio to see if they are the right photographer for the project you have in mind and also speak to other people to see if they are recommended.
I highly recommend Bill for new models entering the business and am personally looking forward to the next project we collaborate on after our cheeky Christmas pinup shoot.
