Marion Davies

Marion Davies who was born Marian Cecilia Douras was an actress, screenwriter, and producer, and also became a philanthropist as she succeeded in her career.

The change of name was mostly due to the acceptance. She thought it would help her to get an entry at the upper level in New York City. As it sounds more British, it pretty much worked.

She was born on 3rd January 1879. Her education was mostly done in a religious school (Convent). She wanted to become a chorus girl. For the same reason, she fled to the school. She was the youngest among five children. All of them were in show business, but Marion was always hungry for more and wanted to achieve more.

Marion Davies Career

Her career was quite early as she became performing as a teenager. She appeared in Broward musicals. Thereafter, she was also offered a role in Runaway Romany which was released in 1917. She still used to perform for many events.

While she was performing in Ziegfeld Follies, she met a newspaper tycoon—William Hearst. Both of them married. William’s age was 53 years while the age of Marion was only 19 years.

William was the reason why she appeared in the Motion picture. He took over the management and prompted her career mostly through his newspaper promotion. She soon became a great star and was also called the “queen of the screen” by some people.

Marion Facts

Marion’s audience was die-hard fans as well as toxic at the same time. The crowd would gather around the entrance when the girls used to enter. She was getting a lot of male attention at a very young age. In fact, Hearst was also a huge fan and he always used to sit in the front row to see Marion. It made her comfortable and even scared her a little bit.

He was also in one of the studios where Davies was a model. After realizing the same thing, Davies was scared and left the studio in fear. Till now, William hadn’t even approached her. However, her friends had already warned Marion about the man. Hearst also spent more than $7 million on her when he was promoting her. So, William was the reason why Marion reached the top.

On the other side, some of the audience was very toxic. Once, they didn’t like the show and threw rotten eggs and tomatoes at her. Not to mention, William was also a huge fan of hers.

Although all her sisters were in the same business, she was pretty much safe-made. She started performing at an early age which then led to a meeting with the newspaper tycoon from which Marion Davies’ career started to change.

Last Days of Davies

In the last few days, she was the opposite of where she started. The media had a bad image of her and were writing badly about her skills. Her husband and her friends also passed away. She started heavy drinking, had a minor cerebral stroke, broke her leg, and then passed away with malignant osteomyelitis on September 22, 1961.
