I’ve had a few people ask me how I managed to get to where I am and how I got a lot of work and stuff. I have a marketing background, so I understood that one of the main rules of marketing outflow equals inflow. When I first started, I was getting more work than any of my other classmates who were trained by the same big-name professional at the time. What I did that was different was that I went online and I contacted all my friends. I had some friends already in the industry, so I contacted about five friends a day. I let them know that I was getting into script supervising and that I was professionally trained and that I was available for work.
I didn’t really get anything from that specifically, but I also went on to Craigslist and posted every day. Now Craigslist sucksat first–no offence to Craigslist–but I mean it can suck to be on it looking for work because you’re not getting the highest paid jobs. But if you are new and you are starting out, and especially if you’re not professionally trained or you don’t have a mentor or anything, one of the best things to do is just to get on there. I submitted to everything every day and also, I submitted to jobs that weren’t looking for a script supervisor because most people don’t even know they need one.OnCraigslistyou will now and again find some really good shows on there. I submitted to one that was a two-million-dollar picture that actually flipped and went to the union. All I’m saying is that its highly, highly possible that you find some gems there. I’m also not trying to knock anything here in this blog, but I am letting you know some of the things that I did.
So,I haven’t had to go on Craigslist in probably two or three years now, which is great, but if I needed work or something like that, I might see some old-timers that have like a huge amount of credit and they basically aren’t getting work. And one of the things is, is that you just have to get out there and work. I had been doing this for 20, 30 years and wasn’t getting work, the first thing I would do is to get back on Craigslist for sure, start emailing my friends and asking how they’re doing and letting them know I’m available for work.
Fortunately, I don’t need to do that these days. It’s something I don’t even do these days, but it definitely helped in the first couple of years. The friends that I was reaching out to weren’t-friends that I had worked with as a script supervisor, they were people that didn’t know I was a script supervisor. So I was giving them new information when I was contacting them. That is key. When you’re reaching out to people in the industry, be sure that you’re adding value by telling them about your skills.
