Quality and quantity

There’s a rule in business and usually it’s quality over quantity. I went over this a little bit before, but I actually believe that quantity should come first and then quality will follow. To break yourself of the habit of perfection, you know, the syndrome of always needing everything to be perfect, focus on producing quantity, quantity, quantity. I actually address this a bit in my book and also cite other books, but basically, it’s been proven that when you work on putting out quantity first, the quality will come.

One of the things I like to do is do a little bit of research, and we’re not talking about weeks and weeks worth of research here, but a little bit about the profession you want to explore can really help you to get started. Then just do it. Lots, lots, lots, lots. Like what I’m doing with modeling. Now that I’ve had some experience I’ve started going online and looking at tips on modeling, looking at some of the best models on the planet.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that I’m ever going to be the greatest model ever and of course I face a lot of criticism. You know, some people say that I’m short amongst other things, including that models are supposed to be 19 at their peak and of course I’m not 19, but there are all different types of models and there’re all these people that break those rules and they become successful at it.

One of the people that I like to watch, to get my modeling game up, is Fresh Pepper. I really enjoy watching his YouTube channel. Originally I was checking out his videos on different modeling poses, but he’s really informative in just every one of his videos and is a great resource. So I totally recommend him. And I just think he’s a wonderful teacher and model and I wish him the most success.

But back to what I was saying about quality versus quantity. There are many ways to get started. You can follow some of Fresh Pepper’s tips and he has suggestions for different ways of starting out in the modeling world, but I can only tell you how I did it. I just went out there and did it. I started by doing trade for photos, and doing group shoot meet ups and I’m actually going to talk about this in some other blog post. But in short, they have meet ups that are arranged via an app. A group of models and aspiring models meet up and do shoots with one or more photographers.

There is also more than one kind of modeling. I have a friend that modeled for painters and stuff, and that was always really, really nice. If this is something you’re interested in, you could go to art classes and offer your services or put ads in the paper, saying you’re a model looking for photographers to trade for photos. Another option is to start following photographers and models on Instagram and Facebook. It’s easy enough to search for them and find them, or you can subscribe to my Instagram and from there you can go through my list and follow those photographers and models that speak to you.

Not everyone I follow is a model or photographer, but you can generally tell which ones are and I try to always credit all my photographers on Instagram and Facebook as much as I can. So anyway, that’s something you can do that if you want to do, but then get your quantity up, which will get your quality up and then work on getting your quantity up again. Now, I know it may suck to work for free, believe me, I’m doing a lot of trade for photos right now, but then again, some people are paying me too. The upside is that I’m getting better and the photo’s are getting so much better. With all the experience I’ve been getting, I’m able to at my photos objectively, seeing what moves work, what poses work, how I look a certain way and then I change, you know, my hair, my posing, my moves. I learn and I change.

I’m also starting to up my game by working with more makeup artists and wardrobe people. So those are other people that you will be able to find on my social media, too, when I start posting the pictures taken with their help because I’ll be thanking those wardrobe and makeup artists. Always be sure to give credit where credit is due.
